K-MART Nickel & Dimes Single Mothers
Today (03/17/2008) I was in your store number 4956 and I was trying to exchange 4- 40 count packs of Huggies size 1 diapers for Huggies size 2 diapers. I became very disappointed when at the register the clerk said that I could not get a different size because I had to have a receipt. I explained to her that they were a baby shower gift when I was 38 weeks pregnant and I had had my baby on November 13,2007. She scanned them and each one of them rang up $1.00 so she called the store manager “Malik.” After, 3 over head pages and waiting for 15 minutes he called to say that he would not honor the exchange at all. All this was said to the cashier when I had initially asked her to let me speak to the manager. Either way I moved to the side and called the posted number myself and then I spoke with store manager Terri at length about this issue. She said she sympathized with me but had no way to override the transaction and that she could only give me $4.00 for 4 packs of diapers.
I TOLD HER I DID NOT WANT THE MONEY THAT I NEEDED THE SIZE 2 DIAPERS. She told me that the manufacturer (Huggies) had increased the quantity to their size one packs in January so to get the 40 count packs off of their shelves they sold them for $1.00 in January 2008. I explained to her that I am a single mother that I do not want the money that I need the diapers and I was willing to pay the difference in the cost of the shelf size 1’s to the shelf size 2’s. I explained to her that she was not losing money because the diapers had already been bought. She then said about how their return policy is longer than most stores. Well, I have a receipt of were I went to TARGET with a pack of diapers and got a full refund/exchange and he didn’t even ask for my identification and even went and go the new size off of the shelf for me. Needless, to say I had to ask for the corporate number and got the 1-866-KMART-4-U number and the $4.00 gift card. So I proceed to go food shopping which is what I was there for anyway. I get my merchandise and the cashier was beautiful with great customer service as always. She even double bagged my heavy items. Then on my way home I call the national office and got Shannon(73143), who basically informs me “That the manager didn’t have to do that for you and all I can do is note your complaint.”
However, before I got off the phone with her rude didn’t give a crap self she gave me the address and number to contact the corporate office. The information is: 3333 Beverly Road, Hoffman Estates, Illinois, 60179/ 1-847-286-2500. I am basically writing because this is ridiculous to treat parents like this when it is basically at your discretion to honor a refund or not. I am 99% positive that they will not sell those diapers for $1.00 a piece at the store. I would like to know if it is in your policy to trick people buying baby gifts into the idea that they can be returned if the wrong item is bought. I would also like to know if it is in your policy to Nickel and Dime your customers. Finally, this letter is being forwarded to the Better Business Bureau, The local News 2 here, and www.pissedconsumer.com.
Thank you,
J. Ing.
